How to apply for a vehicle licence

NOTE: New Vehicle Licencing Restrictions! – At present, the National Transport Authority is accepting applications for new vehicle licences only for wheelchair accessible taxis, wheelchair accessible hackneys, local area hackneys and limousines.

Complete the VL1 Form – Download and complete the VL1 form. (This form is for new small public service vehicle licence applications only, except in respect of a local area hackney licence, see Form LAH 1)

Send VL1 Form + Fee – Send the completed VL1 form along with the relevant fee* (fees are listed in the G1 information guide below) to SPSV Licensing Section, PO Box 436, City North Business Park, Tuam Road, Galway, Ireland
*Fees are accepted in form of cheque, draft or Postal Order (payable to National Transport Authority). For payment by credit or debit card, call 0761 064 000

If your application is approved, the Authority sends you a Conditional Offer letter, which specifies a five-digit provisional licence number. For taxis and wheelchair accessible taxis, this number is required for programming the taximeter and purchasing the matching roof sign and taxi branding. The Conditional Offer is valid for 90 days, during which you must complete the other steps in the licensing process.
